No complete immunity to president, says Wajihuddin

LAHORE: Justice (retd) Wajihuddin Ahmed, former chief justice of Sindh High Court (SHC), on Saturday said that the president of Pakistan enjoys immunity only in criminal matters under Article 248 of the Constitution of Pakistan.

Wajih said this while addressing lawyers at the Aiwan-e-Adl on the invitation of newly elected cabinet of the bar.

He said Article 248 does not provide complete immunity to the president of Pakistan as the president has immunity only in criminal matters. He said that if the Supreme Court of Pakistan had dealt with the matters relating to Taj Haider, Sharjeel Memon, Babar Awan and other contempt issues earlier, the situation would have been different today.

He said no doubt they were backing the judiciary but the judiciary could learn through constructive criticism. He demanded of the judiciary to decide the cases as early as possible.

He invited the lawyer community to contest elections from best platform and the doors of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf were always open for them. He said that the Quaid-i-Azam, Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln were also lawyers and worked for the welfare of the lawyers.

Malik assures complete security to Mansoor Ejaz

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Rehman Malik said on Friday that American businessman Mansoor Ejaz would be provided complete security on his arrival to Pakistan.

Talking to media outside the Parliament House he said Mansoor will have to answer various questions in connection with the toppling of the government of Benazir Bhutto and the vilification campaign against security agencies. It is to be probed as to why Mansoor becomes active whenever the government of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) takes charge of the country, he said.

Regarding extra ordinary security measures in Islamabad on January 19, he said he had credible information that some unscrupulous elements could try to create problems in the Supreme Court for the government. Malik said few individuals even tried to create some disturbance, but due to tight security within a kilometre’s radius of the court, no untoward incident occurred.

About the kidnapping of foreigners, he said a report has been sought from the concerned and details would be shared with the media. He said the government will complete a five-year term despite the demand of Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Chief Nawaz Sharif for early elections. He said according to a report of the Khanpur blast on Chehlum procession a three to four kilogramme intensity bomb was planted in a transformer. Answering another question, he said, the contract employees of National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) are being regularised.

Assemblies to complete terms, govt to continue: Makhdoom

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Commerce and senior leader of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Makhdoom Amin Fahim has vowed that the present assemblies will complete their tenure and Gilani government will stay in office till the time the term of the assemblies is complete.

The Makhdoom who met the president and prime minister Tuesday at length told The News in an informal chat at the Parliament House that present government is not confronting any political problem. The rumour mongering is not a new thing as kite flying is on rampant ever since the government has assumed the office.

The genuine political leadership is aware that the Gilani government will continue till the end of the tenure of the assemblies but political constrains are compelling them to shy away from the truth. The media hype has pumped in air in the balloon of crisis otherwise the situation has not gone that worse that the government should feel any problem about its survival.

The completion of the tenure of the Parliament and the government would be a good omen for democracy in Pakistan. ‘We must put efforts to strengthen the democracy and discourage such practices which are detrimental for the democratic order in the country, he said.

Catalyst's Aperio Sale Could Complete By February

Private equity player Catalyst Investment Managers could complete an exit of its packaging business Aperio Group within the next month, a person familiar with the matter told Deal Journal Australia.

Pact Group has submitted a bid in the lower end of the 250 million Australian dollar (US$256 million) to A$300 million price range targeted by Catalyst’s adviser Greenhill Caliburn and is up against listed player Amcor.

Aperio operates 12 flexible packaging manufacturing plants across Australia, New Zealand and Thailand and operates in the market segments of biscuits, beverages, confectionery, pet food personal hygiene and agriculture among others.

According to its website, Catalyst acquired in May 2005 Aperio in partnership its managing director Peter Sutton to acquire AEP Industries’ Australasian packaging assets.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has been reviewing Amcor’s proposal to acquire Aperio Group since Nov. 14 last year, and proposes to announce its findings on Feb. 9. The competition watchdog will be considering the market share of an Amcor division which has 20 flexible packaging manufacturing operations in seven countries including Australia.

Pact’s executive chairman is Raphael “Ruffy” Geminder, the partner of Fiona Pratt who wholly owns the company which was originally part of her late father Richard’s paper, recycling and package empire, Visy. Visy’s executive chairman is Fiona’s elder brother Anthony Pratt and Geminder sits on the board of the Carlton Football Club alongside mother-in-law Jeanne Pratt.

Ernst & Young are advising Catalyst on its sale of its 49% stake in fresh produce provider Moraitis, which it has owned alongside the Moraitis family since May 2006. The company has its own exclusive potatoes and tomatoes including the “Golden Delight” and “Red Rascal”.
