Last day of auditions for S Asia�s biggest music event

KARACHI: South Asia’s greatest music competition will be held shortly in Dubai with auditions for participants continuing in Karachi and Lahore, organised under the auspices of Geo TV in Pakistan and Sahara TV, India. Today (Wednesday) is the last day for the auditions.

The 10-member team from Pakistan will be led by singer Atif Aslam while the Indian team will be led by Himesh Reshammiya. Following the announcement of the competition on Geo TV and dailies The News and Jang, candidates for the audition thronged in large numbers for auditions, with the cold wave spreading across the country not deterring young boys and girls from standing in long queues waiting for their turn to sing.

Samina Qureshi, a student of second year, said she had enjoyed music since her childhood and fulfilled her passion at the school and college level. But performing at such a level was something unique and while selection among such a large number appeared difficult, there was no harm in trying one’s luck, she said.

Jenefer Riaz, a nurse by profession, said music was the food of the soul and in our profession there was more sorrow than happiness, which could be minimised through music. “I have come to join the programme after seeing the promo of the competitions,” she said.

Montessori directress Kanwal Zuberi said the news in Daily Jang had forced her to come out and audition. “I have been a fan of Asha Bhonsley from childhood and my wish to meet her has forced me to come here. I know great voices have gathered here but the auditions will show who has more passion,” she said.

A large number of participants from different cities and towns of Sindh and Punjab attended the audition being held in Karachi and Lahore.

Talking to Geo News Atif Aslam said he would try to provide the best stage to Pakistani voices, adding that he was proud of the voices of his country and sure his team would compete with full force in the musical competition. He said that several singers including Himesh Reshammiya made tall claims but voices like those of Pakistanis could not be found anywhere. He said that he would try his best to take the best talent with him and take along participants who not only considered music a hobby but also approached it with determination and zeal.

Atif Aslam said he would make the best efforts to guide the young singers in his charge. He said the aim during auditions was to select singers who could not only sing classical and pop songs but were also familiar with latest songs. He also said the participants should be dynamic and have stage presence and would be judged for the way they talked and presented themselves on stage. He said this was important because they were representing Pakistan on an international stage.
